If he had his way, United Manager Jose Mourinho would have not make midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and defender Marcos Rojo part of his plans.
However, the club just couldn’t seem to find the right buyer anywhere to take the duo off Mourino’s hands. The summer transfer window came and went, with Rojo and Schweinsteiger still on the roster.
Manchester United have released their official squad list for the first half of the Premier League season. When you look at the names on the list, you see a couple surprises, the biggest of all being Bastian Schweinsteiger
Here’s the full squad, as posted on the official Premier League website.
Full squad: Eric Bailly, Daley Blind, Michael Carrick, Matteo Darmian, David De Gea, Memphis Depay, Sadiq El-Fitouri, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sam Johsntone, Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Paul Pogba, Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero, Wayne Rooney, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young
Under-21 players: Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw
Mourinho said: ‘We have a decision completely made about Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera, Morgan Schneiderlin, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick.
‘We have five players for two positions. It’s very difficult that an opportunity will arrive.’
Marcos Rojo has certainly had his ups and downs since he came over to Old Trafford in the summer of 2014. Rojo has often found himself often on the bench, and the target of harsh criticism from United supporters on social media.
Obviously, Rojo did himself no favors with all his passport issues and international paper work problems; and the Argentine landed in the dog house of then manager Louis van Gaal once or twice.
It’s also worth noting the three major stars United have in the U21s. It conveys just how bright the future is at Old Trafford, and here’s a link to more on that topic.
United Manager Jose Mourinho‘s treatment of Schweinsteiger this summer has been quite controversial.
There’s been so much controversy that many prominent figures have called it bullying. Although to be fair, the most vocal critic of Mourinho’s treatment of Schweinsteiger, the attorney/player union rep who said it was criminal, walked back that critique with an apology.
