United Passing on Renato Sanches Will Hurt them Says Portugal Defender

Manchester United didn’t accomplish anything this past January transfer window, as they abstained from buying even a single player. They reportedly had two main late window targets- Ahmed Musa and Renato Sanches.

The latter signed with Bayern Munich for £28 million in May, as the Red Devils pulled the plug in order to explore “alternative targets” according to the Daily Mirror at the time. Sanches, Benfica’s 18-year-old attacking midfielder, was not approved by then Manager Louis van Gaal.

According to the Telegraph back in May, Van Gaal appeared secure in his role after the Manchester United boss admitted he vetoed the move for Renato Sanches. LVG’s decision will hurt the team going forward as he’s a big time missed opportunity, according to Sanches’ Portugal teammate, Jose Fonte.

Renato Sanches scored the equalizer in Portugal’s defeat of Poland in the Euro 2016 quarterfinals today.

“Being a Premier League player, for me, they missed out on a very good talent,” Fonte said.

“He’s a nice kid, he listens to the old guys, he wants to learn, which is good. It’s great to have him around and he’ll be the future of the national side for sure.”

“He’s got no fear. He just doesn’t care. He goes and asks for the ball every second,” Fonte added.

“He’s got power and strength, energy to run all day and great ability. It is lucky for Bayern Munich that they have him.”
