José Mourinho was in a very upbeat but also combative mood after his side’s 2-0 win over Swansea City today, sending a loud and clear message to the critics of his team. Mourinho wanted to make it known that his team will do everything in their power to finish second in the Premier League this season.
“Since the moment we left the first position and went to second, we stayed there for the whole of the season. We deserve to finish second, in spite of what you can say, the critiques you can make,” Mourinho said.
“People will say the third, the fourth, the fifth, the sixth- they’re better than us, but they’re not better than us, because we have more points than them.”
“So we have seven matches left and we are going to fight every match, to try and finish second.”
The only team with a chance of catching United for second place is arch-rival Liverpool, who are two points behind. However United have a game in hand on the Reds. Obviously, this message Mourinho directly aimed at his critics today was also indirectly aimed at Liverpool.
United will travel across town for the Manchester Derby next weekend, and attempt to keep City from celebrating their Premier League title conquest in front of them. If City beats United next weekend, the champions-in-waiting will officially become the league champions.
While Mourinho was declaring his second ambitions, he was joined by Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal, after he invited him to join him on stage. Mourinho even hailed the Swans leader as”‘the manager of the season” due to his fine job he’s done so far of likely saving the Welsh side from relegation.
