Iowa Hawkeyes Sell out Name of Basketball Court

Well at least the name of the Arena remains. It’s not the Dunkin Donuts Center, or one of the other many arenas in the Big East with a horrible sounding corporate name.

Today the University of Iowa and the state of Iowa’s premiere telecommunications provider agreed to an expansion of their current marketing partnership that includes sponsorship of the competition surfaces inside the Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

That’s right. You’ve heard of “Coach K. Court,” “Gene Keady Court,” “Eddie Sutton Court” etc. well the Iowa Hawkeyes present to you…

…Effective with the UI men’s basketball team’s game Wednesday (Feb. 2) against Michigan State, the playing floor inside the UI’s award-winning athletics facility will be referred to as “Mediacom Court” for all men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball events, and “Mediacom Mat” for all wrestling events.

The new agreement also provides Mediacom with the sponsorship rights to the outdoor club level of the Paul W. Brechler Press Box at Kinnick Stadium, e.g. the “Mediacom Outdoor Club.”

I agree with the University on this one. What name in their college basketball history is worth getting his own court anyway?
