Ed Woodward: Manchester United Planning Summer Signings, but Reducing Transfer Spending

There will be a ton of Manchester United transfer rumors swirling about once the summer gets here, but perhaps less activity than in years past. Old Trafford could cut back on transfer spending too. At least that’s what’s to be implied following comments made by club leadership on Thursday.

“Are we happy with the roster? There is happiness from the manager in terms of where we are as a squad. We aren’t in a position necessarily where we have to churn a large number of players,” Ed Woodward, United’s Executive Vice Chairman, told club investors on conference call today.

“We want to get to a more steady state, and to be buying and potentially selling a lower number of players each year.

“We are in that kind of environment now, compared to where we were perhaps two or three years ago, when there was a little bit more churn requirement from a playing squad perspective.”

The club EVP’s statements will no doubt inspire a bit of “watch this space,” commentary from United observers, reporters and fans everywhere. Entering last summer, MUFC had never broken the global transfer fee record for a player, but had broken the British transfer record 12 times.

Obviously that changed, as Ed Woodward and company made Paul Pogba the richest player ever, with a £89.3 million deal.

This summer, the main target will be Pogba’s countryman and friend, Antoine Griezmann, with United reportedly interested in buying a second forward as well.

Pogba will supposedly be helping to recruit Griezmann.
