Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger is a long time admirer of Manchester United striker Anthony Martial. This despite the fact that he mistakenly perceived Martial to be more of a winger than a center forward. That has since been cleared up by Martial’s agent. No matter how Wenger perceived he could potentially utilize Martial, he was indeed interested.
It was revealed today that Arsene Wenger just thought Monaco wanted to keep him.
Wenger was quoted in the Daily Star: “I thought they would not sell him this year because they had sold so many other players.”
“They said they would not sell him and I thought they were not in any need to sell and would maintain their word.”
“The amount of money was massive but Monaco could have sold him next season instead. I was surprised they sold him. Only an exceptional amount of money would do it.”
United brought Martial over for £36 million on deadline day; the third highest transfer sum in club history and the largest amount ever for a teenager. With add-ons, the amount could reach into the 50 millions. Hey, money talks. Although Wenger is essentially claiming here that Monaco broke their word over Anthony Martial.
Wenger managed AS Monaco from 1987-1994, so maybe he thought he would have connections/the inside track for acquiring Martial?
It’s not yet another intriguing story line in tomorrow’s United-Arsenal clash. Which is easily the most important game in the Premier League this weekend.
