Northwestern freshman guard Alex Marcotullio is the latest Wildcat men’s basketball player to earn an opportunity to compete internationally as he has been invited to the Great Britain U20 training camp.
A native of Warren, Mich., Marcotullio appeared in all 34 games for the Wildcats as a freshman during the 2009-10 campaign. He averaged 4.8 points and 14 minutes per game and ranked 15th in the Big Ten with a .369 3-point field goal percentage.
Marcotullio qualifies to compete for Great Britain based on the fact that his maternal grandfather is a native of Scotland.
“I think this is a tremendous opportunity for Alex,” Northwestern head coach Bill Carmody said. “He’s coming off a nice freshman season and anytime you have the chance to play against good competition and potentially face different kinds of players from all over the world, it’s a great thing.”
Marcotullio reported to Manchester, England, this week to begin tryouts for the team along with approximately 20 other individuals. Members of the team’s final roster culminate their competitive schedule July 14-24 at the European Championships in Austria.
Marcotullio follows in the footsteps of sophomores John Shurna and Kyle Rowley who both competed internationally last summer. Shurna won a gold medal as a member of the United States team which captured the title at the FIBA U19 World Championships. Rowley was a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Senior National Team which participated in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Men’s Basketball Championships.
