American international Clint Dempsey has just announced his retirement. The 35-year-old forward played for four clubs during his 14 year career, two in the English Premier League and two in American Major League Soccer.

With Tottenham Hotspur (2012-13), he scored seven times in 29 appearances. He also played for another London club, Fulham, where he featured 189 times (2007-2012, and on loan in 2014) where he scored five goals. In MLS, he scored 47 goals in 115 appearances with the Seattle Sounders and found the back of the net 25 times in 71 games with the New England Revolution.

Dempsey, who accomplished oh so much during his storied career (see above a list of his feats) announced that he was hanging up his boots via his official verified Instagram account. “Thank you, it’s been real” he wrote, accompanied by a peace sign emoji.

The statement attributed to Dempsey on the Seattle Sounders official club site reads:

“After a lot of thought, my family and I have decided that this is the right time for me to step away from the game. I’d like to thank all of the teammates, coaches and support staff that I’ve worked with throughout my career. It has always been my dream to make it as a pro.”

“I’m grateful to have been on this ride. I would like to thank all of the fans who have supported me throughout my career with the New England Revolution, Fulham, Tottenham, Seattle Sounders and the U.S. Men’s National Team.

“Y’all have always made me feel at home, and it is something that I will always remember.”
