Prior to today, the last Tottenham Hotspur signing was forward Lucas Moura, who moved to north London from Paris Saint-Germain for £23 million on January 31, 2018. Yes, it was 517 days ago.

On July 2, 2019, Spurs broke out of that drought with authority, splashing the cash to the tune of £73 million on two players. The first to be announced was Leeds United winger Jack Clarke, who moved over for a reported £10 million. The 18-year-old will return to training with Marcelo Bielsa’s side and stay with them on loan for this season, but his new Spurs contract runs until 2023. Here’s more on him.

The second player to be signed is Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, who was heavily linked with a move to Spurs  all last month.

Ndombele has even been linked with a potential move to Manchester United, the transfer narrative being that Old Trafford was going to hijack Spurs’ move at the last minute, a la Romelu Lukaku with Chelsea in 2017. Maybe that was more of an agent driven item of fake news, maybe, who knows?

Ndombele is now a member of the European runners-up, and he broke the club transfer fee record in getting to that benchmark. The fee, of £54 million plus £9 million in add-ons, surpasses the previous mark held by Davinson Sanchez.
