The Bobby Hauck experiment…did not last very long at all. After just four games, or 1/3 of one season, the University of Illinois football program is parting ways with their Defensive Coordinator. Officially, this is a “mutual parting of ways,” but given how the defense performed through the first four games, this has to be a firing.
We all saw that the 3-3-5 was simply not working, and there is a reason that next to nobody, in college football, utilizes that scheme.
The defense looked mid, at best, through the first three games, in which Illinois went 2-1.
However, the unit got their doors blown off yesterday, at #4 Ohio State, as they surrendured 518 yards of total offense in a 42-19 blowout loss. The most glaring flaw in yesterday’s game plan, among many, was the decision to cover OSU wide receiver Jeremiah Smith one-and-one.
Smith is the current Heisman Trophy front-runner and the #1 overall NFL Draft prospect, regardless of position.
The concept of not doubling him, at the very least, was comical. Smith became a national headline while Hauck’s game plan was made into a punchline. Smith hails from wide receiver U. and yesterday he became the first Buckeye to score four touchdown receptions in a single game.
He also had 12 catches for 217 yards. Meanwhile Illinois yielded 96 points in their first three games against FBS opponents.
And then there was this:

“I can’t understand it. We’ll make sure that we get that moment corrected. That’s got to be 100% on me to move forward.”

Most likely that was the final straw that broke the camel’s back. It’s one thing to have your players confused in assignment, or situated out of position, which happened quite a bit through the first third of the season.
Not having enough men on the field though? And by not one, but two players? That’s basically dark comedy.
“Coach Hauck reached out to me early this morning and asked to meet ahead of our planned meeting time,” reads the statement attributed to Bielema.
“We met and mutually agreed that a change in leadership was in the best interests of our defense. Coach Hauck and I agreed this is the best path forward for our staff, and most importantly, our student-athletes, at this time. I would like to thank Bobby for his work with our program.
“As with any turnover, we have prepared for this moment and we have a plan to move our program forward. We are communicating that plan internally to our staff and players today.”
So there you have it, Illinois is not publicizing, at this time, who the new DC is. Obviously, we will get some answers well ahead of the next game, the Homecoming clash against Purdue on October 3rd.
“I enjoyed being a part of the staff here at Illinois and working alongside Coach Bielema every day,” reads the statement attributed to Hauck. “I am very appreciative of the opportunity to be here and thankful for all of the hard work from the players, coaches, and staff. I wish Illinois the best of luck.”
There was widespread speculation, entering this season that Hauck and this scheme were not Bielema’s first choice. Given how quickly Hauck was let go, this theory just gained a lot more credibility. While yes, there were a lot of issues under Hauck’s predecessor Aaron Henry, the unit performed much better then than they did this year.
