Mark Hughes Officially Sacked by Southampton FC, Kelvin Davis Named Interim Boss

Southampton FC officially announced the sacking of manager Mark Hughes this afternoon. This announcement comes just six months after the south coast club had granted him a three year extension. Assistants Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki were also let go. Hughes was appointed in March, and he helped guide the Saints to staying up in the Premier League last season.

It took up until the final Sunday of the season, but Hughes was able to make sure the club avoided relegation. He obviously won’t be given the chance to lead them to safety this year, with the club once again currently struggling mightily.

Although they surprisingly picked up a point on Manchester United over the weekend, in a match where they were massive underdogs, Saints still currently reside in the drop zone.

There is just no stability at all with Southampton these days. The next manager to lead the team after Mark Hughes will be their fifth in the last 18 months. Since June of 2016, the list of men in charge includes Hughes, Claude Puel, Mauricio Pellegrino and Ronald Koeman.

“We would like to express our thanks to Mark Hughes and his staff for all of their efforts during their time at St Mary’s,” the official statement sent out by the club on Monday reads.

“The search for a new manager to take the club forward is already under way.”

Regarding who will be in charge in the interim, the club announced: “First Team Assistant Coach Kelvin Davis will lead the team for Wednesday’s Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.”
