Just about 24 hours until the summer transfer window closes in England, and Manchester United have still not acquired the centre back that they so desperately desire. With Jerome Boateng now out of the equation, United are reportedly expected to re-ignite their Harry Maguire pursuit before the window shuts.
According to club’s all time leading scorer, Wayne Rooney, Old Trafford need more than just the one signing. Wazza, now with D.C. United in Major League Soccer, says his old club needs two signings in order to truly compete with Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.
“I think it will be difficult after the season they had last year. They [Manchester City] have been playing some great football,” he said. But I hope someone can catch them – it would be nice, so hopefully Manchester United can.”
“I think maybe another signing or two. I am sure Jose (Mourinho) has been getting the team right. I know there has been a lot of talk about pre-season in the press but I am sure behind the scenes, Jose has been giving them the right amount of work.
“They have the game against Leicester on Friday so hopefully they can go one step further this year than second and try and get the title back.”
In addition to a central defender, United could also use an upgrade on the right wing, but Mourinho will be very fortunate if he can get one more acquisition over the line in time. Expecting two more signings is definitely a very tall order.
United play in the very first game of the new season, when they host Leicester City Friday night.
