Real Madrid vs Man United Super Cup Inspires Skopje Hotel Price Gouging

Shame on you Skopje hotels! Many in the Macedonian capital’s accommodations business are exploiting the Real Madrid vs. Manchester United August 8th Super Cup meeting by hiking up the prices, and tacking on extra fees. It’s pure price gouging, and it’s on a level as severe as what the NFL did in Houston for Super Bowl 51.

United and Real consistently compete with one another to be the richest and most powerful football club in the world. These two franchises, along with Barcelona, comprise arguably the three biggest football/soccer brands on earth, and thus have gigantic supporter followings.

According to the Daily Mirror, some Skopje hotels are exploiting the very high demand for this game, and fans are feeling ripped off.

The Mirror writes that: “fans – many of whom booked hotel rooms months ago in anticipation of their team winning the Europa Cup – are outraged after hotels in Skopje suddenly increased their prices. Angry supporters complain that hotels are demanding an extra 500 to 900 GBP – per night – to honour the reservations, according to local media reports quoting TV 24, who say they have spoken with fans by phone and have taken statements from them.”

Real Madrid and Manchester United will meet next month in Macedonia as winners of the two UEFA tournaments this past season. Los Blancos claimed the Champions League title, while the Red Devils won the Europa League tournament.

The two sides will also meet in a preseason friendly on July 23rd, but apparently, there won’t be a whole lot of friendliness in that upcoming meeting.

United and Real are both currently training on the campus of UCLA in Westwood, California, with the two clubs setting up shop just 200 yards away from one another, and some squabbling has ensued. United have the superior pitch at Drake Stadium, with better locker room access. They also reportedly have a better hotel situation, which has invited additional bickering.
The acrimony between the two clubs is getting so bad that leadership of the International Champions Cup, a “tournament” that both clubs are taking part in, have had to step in.
