As had been reported yesterday, Manchester United went with the classic “here’s my final offer, take it or leave it” routine to Leicester City for Harry Maguire and it worked. The sum is for a reported £80 million, plus add-ons which is a record breaking amount for a defender.
One of the most protracted and tedious transfer sagas in recent memory is finally coming to an end! The Maguire to United transfer, which has been declared agreed several times already this summer, is finally, really gonna happen now; according to multiple outlets.
The Telegraph appeared to have it first, followed by the BBC, the Press Association and ESPN. The 26-year-old English international, known primarily for his stand out performance with Three Lions during their surprising World Cup run last summer, shatters the previous defender transfer fee record by £5 million.
The old record was the £75 million Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk. While the fee United paid for Maguire might seem exorbitant, it does fill a strong team need. United have been on a long, tedious (up until this point futile) quest for a central defender upgrade.
That objective has finally been reached, along with the end of the Maguire transfer window soap opera.
Both of these things are definitely worth celebrating. So happy Harry Maguire agreement reached day everybody!
This transaction certainly changes the way one views at United’s 2019 summer transfer window for sure.
