In the summer of 2014 America fell in love with its goalkeeper, Tim Howard. He became a national hero during the men’s World Cup. There’s a lot to love about Tim Howard- he’s a PETA advocate, animal rights activist and part-time broadcaster. He’s idealistic and media savvy.
He’s also one of the better goalkeepers in the Premier League. The Everton stopper from New Jersey, USA looks to be headed back to his homeland at the end of the season. America is probably getting their GK back.
a source has told ProSoccerTalk that Howard has held “serious talks” with Colorado and after 10 years at Goodison Park he looks highly likely to sign for the Rapids and supposedly wants a return to the U.S.
If all goes to plan in negotiations between Everton and MLS then Howard could sign this month but would only move to Colorado in May following the conclusion of the 2015-16 Premier League season.
Howard set a new World Cup record for single game saves in the round of 16 and almost brought America to the quarter-finals for the first time in 12 years. After that game, he received a congratulatory telephone call from president Barack Obama and seen a petition for his name to adorn an airport in Washington, D.C. begin online. Memes and photoshops of his heroics went viral.
Tim Howard hasn’t been the same keeper since. The last 18 months or so, his game has dropped off significantly. But then again he was the best goalie in the world at that time. He still has a couple productive years left in him, but perhaps a move closer to home would be good for him.
Age has definitely caught up to Howard, and you know how much Major League Soccer loves to sign big name players from Europe who are in the twilight of their careers. The former Manchester United man would be the biggest name to move this January transfer window, as this signing period has been lacking in big name moves.
