More Chelsea drama today, as the proverbial sword of Damocles currently resides over the head of Manager Jose Mourinho. Following the loss to Leicester City, Mourinho called out his own players, saying he felt betrayed and that their success last season was largely due to all the great work that he had done.
Losing the dressing room, and then publicly announcing that he’s lost his own team is not sitting well with those above Mourinho in the organization. Now it appears that crunch talks are being held, with The Special One’s future to be determined quite soon.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and the rest of the club’s board were continuing to hold intense discussions about Jose Mourinho’s future on Wednesday with the manager’s future in serious doubt, sources have told ESPN FC.
Sources say Chelsea’s top officials met for nine hours on Tuesday…and that talks were continuing on Wednesday.
ESPN FC has been told that a vote will be taken on Mourinho’s future, although that will be used merely to guide the final decision, which will rest with Abramovich.
NBC Sports, as well as numerous other outlets, picked up on this story soon afterward. As it stands now, Mourinho and Chelsea are just one point above relegation, but set to face Paris Saint German in the knockout round of UEFA Champions League.
The defending champions have fallen apart this season, as Mourinho has already verbally conceded defeat in the quest reach top four.
(UPDATE: Five most likely candidates to replace Mourinho, according to the bookies)
