Arsenal had just established themselves as the new Premier League title favorite this week. All the bookmakers ascribed Arsene Wenger’s side the best title odds. So what happens? They went out and got destroyed 4-0 by Southampton today in a result that could have easily been 5-0 or 6-0. How “Gunners under Arsene Wenger recentlty” of them.
In the post game press conference, Wenger found fault with someone outside himself or his players for three of his opponents four goals.
“Well, I think Southampton made the game very physical,” Wenger said. “We lost too many challenges and that explains why we lost the game. But that’s one aspect, so well done to them.”
“The second aspect is that on the first three goals we were really unlucky with the decision of the referee.”
“The first goal was offside, the second goal was a foul and third goal was a goal kick, so if you’re a bit below par and on top of that you have the first three goals against you in the decision-making then it’s even more difficult.
“On top of that, well done Southampton and I hope in the next game we have this kind of decisions for us.”
So there you have it, Wenger shifting some of the blame from his side’s disastrous result today to to referee Jon Moss and his officials.
The Saints were winless in their previous six heading into this one, and the Gunners came in already knowing that a win would have jumped them over Leicester City for the top of the table.
As we have often seen this year, scoring goals was a problem for Wenger’s club again today. You can see why Wenger might see Chicharito as the answer.
