Cubs demote Blake DeWitt, bring up Travis Wood

The Chicago Cubs, sporting the second to worst record in the national league, today recalled left-handed pitcher Travis Wood from Triple-A Iowa.  To make room for Wood on the roster, infielder Blake DeWitt has been designated for assignment.

Wood, wearing number 30, started for the Cubs in today’s storm delayed contest against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

The 25-year-old Wood was acquired from Cincinnati Reds last December as part of the trade that sent left-handed pitcher Sean Marshall to the Reds.  Wood began the season by making five starts with Iowa, going 1-3 with a 5.08 ERA (16 ER/28.1 IP). As Travis Wood comes back, maybe it’s time to think about jettisoning Kerry Wood? One Wood can actually not be dead weight on the roster. Seriously, KW’s career is over. Time to hang it up

Travis Wood is 11-10 with a 4.18 ERA (97 ER/208.2 IP) in 39 games (35 starts) in parts of two major league seasons with the Reds (2010-11).

DeWitt, 26, is batting .138 (4-for-29) with one double and one RBI in 18 games for the Cubs this season.

Wood made his major league debut with the Reds in 2010 at the age of 23, going 5-4 with a 3.51 ERA (40 ER/102.2 IP) in 17 starts for the N.L. Central Division winners. He ranked among the N.L.’s rookie leaders in opponents batting average (.222, second), ERA (fifth), starts (tied for seventh) and innings pitched (seventh).
