The U.S. Women’s National Team, or USWNT, entered the 2015 World Cup as a very slight favorite to win it all, according to most book-makers. Now with group play set to conclude over the next couple of days, the U.S. has been surpassed by Germany as the favorite to take the title.
Most sports books give Germany the best chance, significantly higher than the USWNT. The bookies only give #GER and #USA a real significant chance of winning. Japan, Brazil and Canada have been deemed longshots to take the title, and no other country is even in the conversation.
Needless to say, the USWNT showing their first two games has been solid, enough to be on top of the group standings thus far, but nowhere near enough to be described as impressive. They obviously haven’t looked good enough to inspire the confidence to win it all either.
The Women’s World Cup Tonight crew on FOX Sports gave updated power rankings of their top 10 teams in the tournament so far:
1. Germany
2. Brazil
3. Japan
4. USWNT
5. France
6. Norway
7. Sweden
8. Australia
9. Switzerland
10. Columbia/Canada
Well, at least they have the USWNT making the Final 4, so I guess that’s a reason for optimism.
