Sir Winston Churchill once said that “a fanatic is a person who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject.”

It’s safe to say that the 25-year-old, as of yet unidentified, Chinese man who died of sleep deprivation from watching the World Cup is a soccer/world football fanatic. Yes a fan was found dead in home in Suzhou, near Shanghai in front of his television. He stayed up too many nights in a row watching “the beautiful game” and it was finally The Netherlands 5-1 trouncing of Spain that did him in.

For more I now turn it over to the Daily Mail

With the game kicking off at 4pm local time, it did not finish in China until around 5 in the morning, and doctors believe his death could have been caused by the sleep deprivation.

Medical experts have now warned football fans in China about the dangers should they sacrifice sleep during the tournament.

It’s not the first time a Chinese football fan has died after staying awake to watch the game.

During Euro 2012 one supporter spent 11 sleepless nights watching every game of the tournament and died from exhaustion.

Chinese hospitals also saw a surge in patients admitted with symptoms of exhaustion during the World Cups in 2006 and 2010.

Sadly, not only could this tragedy have been averted, it’s a tragic scenario that’s actually occurred before. And come close to occurring on other occasions multiple times. You’ve ehad the expression “soccer (or football) is a matter of life and death,” but it’s not meant to be taken seriously. I guess we’re using the cliche “soccer is a religion here.”
