Applying the Allan Houston Rule to the NBA Pacific Division Teams in 2011

One of the topics expected to be discussed during the NBA Lockout is the possible revival of The Allan Houston Rule.  When a new CBA was agreed upon in 2005, it allowed NBA teams a one time opportunity to waive a player and not have his contract count against the luxury tax teams have to pay if their team salary exceeds a pre-determined amount set by the league.  The released player becomes a free agent but his salary still gets paid and counts against his former team’s salary cap.  Ironically enough, Allan Houston was not a victim of The Allan Houston Rule.  The Knicks instead decided to waive Jerome Williams.

If the new CBA once again invokes this clause, most teams will probably take advantage since it would save them possibly tens of millions of dollars.  To keep up with the times, we will change the name of this from “The Allan Houston Rule” to the “Rashard Arenas Rule” since Rashard Lewis and Gilbert Arenas easily have the two worst contracts in the league.  Allow me to break down each team and who would end up being the casualties of this rule.  Here is the Pacific Division.

The 2010 NBA free agent class was unlike anything we have seen in the history of the league; loaded with superstar talent switching homes and of course, “The Decision.”  The 2011 free agent class is going to be the exact opposite.  It is going to be weaker than a Survivor contestant on the 37th day of eating nothing more than mangoes and rice.

Since I first posted this article at the end of last July, a lot of the possible big names in the 2011 class have signed extensions that will prevent them from hitting the market.  That list includes Carmelo Anthony, Joakim Noah, Al Horford, and Tony Parker.  Here is an updated look at the very underwhelming crop of free agents that will be available this off-season.

Orlando Magic Look to Keep Pace in Eastern Conference

Dwight Howard Magic

While that other Florida NBA franchise was making a commotion this off-season, forever changing the landscape of the league, the Orlando Magic quietly sat back and avoided making any panic moves.  And why should they have?  Orlando has established themselves as one of the elite teams in the league.  But do they have what it takes to beat out the Heat and Celtics in the Eastern Conference?
