Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Wisconsin Badgers: Brutally Honest Preview

The Illinois Fighting Illini and Wisconsin Badgers have a lot in common in 2012 and it’s not a good thing. Most notably is the unexpected and disappointing starts  for both teams. Neither team looked half-decent against non-conference foes and both lost their Big Ten openers.

The Illini’s new head coach Tim Beckman could already be on the hot-seat and the Wisconsin Badgers are without any kind of identity on the offensive side of the ball.

Let the battle of the Big Ten’s Legends Division begin.

Taking a look at the Wisconsin Badgers Quarterback Carousel

Following the Wisconsin Badgers’ Thursday practice, head coach Bret Bielema officially announced that the team will start freshman Joel Stave at quarterback in the upcoming game with UTEP.

It’s not the only thing Bielema said as he also mentioned playing all three of the Badgers’ quarterbacks in different situations.

For a team searching for it’s identity in the offense, the last thing they need to be doing is going back-and-forth between different signal callers. [Read more…]

Wisconsin Badgers vs. UTEP: Brutally Honest Preview

At the center of a struggling Wisconsin Badgers’ offense lies a quarterback controversy. Will the Badgers (2-1) head  coach, Bret Bielema, go with redshirt freshman Joel Stave or stick with the experienced Danny O’Brien?

While Bielema has said he already knows who he’s sending out on Saturday morning, the University of Texas El-Paso probably doesn’t care as they are hoping a third time’s the charm. This is the Miners (1-2) third shot at an upset of a BCS-conference team after falling short to Oklahoma and Ole Miss in their first two games.

Week Two Unkind To Big Ten

For about half the conference last Saturday, week two could not have been much worse.  Penn State lost a second straight nail-biter with a  17-16 defeat at the hands of  Virginia, which ended  with Sam Ficken missing his fourth field goal of the day! The Nebraska defense gave up 653 yards to UCLA in their 36-30 loss. Iowa could only muster six points in their 9-6 defeat by Iowa State. Wisconsin had a dismal 35 yards rushing in their upsetting loss to Oregon State. And Purdue lost their fifth straight game in a 20-17 heartbreaker to Notre Dame.

Wisconsin Badgers loss stings but not a season-ender

A shot at the National Championship Game is off the table, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the Wisconsin Badgers season is over.

Yes, they were outplayed in every facet of the game in a 10-7 loss to the Oregon State Beavers.

Bad play on the road is nothing new for the Badgers. Even Russell Wilson couldn’t save them from going 2-2 in true road games last season, including a game where they struggled to beat an Illinois team clearly not on the same level as them.

It might sound counter-intuitive, but there’s still a lot to like about this Badgers team. [Read more…]

West Coast Nightmare: Wisconsin Badgers Upset by Oregon State (Rapid Reaction)

Oregon State pulled off the biggest upset of the young college football season on Saturday, stunning the #13 Wisconsin Badgers 10-7 on their home-field.

What a way for the Beavers (1-0) to kick off their 2012 campaign, by denying the Badgers (1-1) of their 34th consecutive win against a non-conference opponent  and an absolute nightmare for Wisconsin who had high hopes the year.

#13 Wisconsin Badgers vs. Oregon State: Brutally Honest Preview

After narrowly escaping an upset bid from FCS-level Northern Iowa, the #13 Wisconsin Badgers are west-coast bound where they will meet the Pac-12’s Oregon State Beavers. This will be the Badgers (1-0) first ever trip to Corvallis to take on a Beavers (0-0) squad making their season debut.

The Badgers took care of business against Oregon State last season, a 35-0 thumping at Camp Randall.

Wisconsin Badgers Danny O’Brien as good as advertised

Despite an underwhelming 26-21 win for the Wisconsin Badgers over the FCS’s Northern Iowa, quarterback Danny O’Brien was certainly impressive when utilized.

The junior transfer made his first start at Camp Randall by completing 19-of-23 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns.

Comparisons to Russell Wilson will inevitably be made, but don’t be mistaken, he’s a completely different player looking to lead Wisconsin down a similar path of success. [Read more…]

Wisconsin Badgers underwhelm in win over Panthers (Rapid Reaction)

The Wisconsin Badgers season opener against the Northern Iowa Panthers didn’t go quite as planned, but they did pull out the 26-21 win. All things considered, the Panthers (0-1) had a legitimate shot to take the lead late in the fourth quarter until the Badgers (1-0) defense buckled down and saved the game.

Last season, former quarterback Russell Wilson and offensive coordinator Paul Chryst had the Badgers scoring in less than sixty seconds, but it appears new OC Matt Canada and the Badgers will return to a more traditional and conservative approach in 2012.

#14 Wisconsin Badgers: College Football 77 in 77

With perennial Big Ten powers Ohio State and Penn State suffering through controversy and Michigan taking a step back for a couple of years, the Wisconsin Badgers have cemented their status among the league’s elite.  Bret Bielema has transitioned from the Barry Alvarez Era without missing a beat.  Another transfer quarterback steps under center in Madison, but it will be their always dangerous ground game that could have UW smelling roses for a third straight season.

Wisconsin Badgers new “free agent signing” at QB: Maryland’s Danny O’Brien

Fresh off the success of last year’s so-called “rent-a-player” or “free agent quarterback signing” Russell Wilson, the Wisconsin Badgers inked another prominent college football transfer: Maryland’s Danny O’Brien. The junior will have two years of eligibility in Madison beginning this fall.

They had been in the hunt for Notre Dame signal caller Dayne Crist, but he choose to follow the coach who recruited him, Charlie Weiss, to the Kansas Jayhawks instead. If O’Brien enjoys even a fraction of the success the last ACC transferdid (new NCAA record for single season passing efficiency, set in the Rose Bowl, greatest year by a quarterback in Badgers, Big Ten history), then this process will have been well worth it.

College Football 77 in 77: #44 Maryland Terrapins

maryland terrapins

Fear the Turtle? Depends on who you talk to. There seems to be a very big standard deviation in terms of where college football gurus have the Maryland Terrapins going this year. It all depends on how much you believe the running game (ranked 82nd in the nation last year) will improve in 2011. Yes, the defense returns 7/10 tacklers from last fall, so it’s going to be on the O to get it done in College Park. And Terps starting signal caller Danny O’Brien could bring home the Davey O’Brien this fall (see what I did there?) as he’s the best returning passer in the ACC.

Over the years, the Terrapins have produced several prominent quarterbacks. Starting with three consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championships from 1983 to 1985, the program was sometimes referred to as “Quarterback U”.Since then, Maryland quarterbacks Boomer Esiason, Frank Reich, Stan Gelbaugh, Neil O’Donnell, Scott Zolak, and Scott Milanovich have been considered part of that tradition.
