Gabe Carimi has been a huge bust with the Chicago Bears. There’s no denying that. “The Bear Jew,” I’m not kidding that is his nickname, has stood out as a horrible offensive lineman; even amidst a really bad O Line. Sunday night reports said Carimi and the Bears have parted ways. Two sources told the Chicago Sun-Times that the Bears received a sixth-round pick in 2014 in return for Carimi, a former first-round pick. Since regular Chicago Bears beat writer Sean Jensen is no longer with the Sun-Times, this story was reported by S-T Blackhawks writer Adam Jahns.
Carimi will travel to Tampa Bay tomorrow. He was taken by the Bears 29th overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. He began the 2011 season as the Bears’ starting right tackle.
Former Chicago Bears GM Jerry Angelo took eight players in the first round of the NFL Draft during his tenure. Not a single one is on the roster today. As a senior with the Wisconsin Badgers, Carimi won the 2010 Outland Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate interior lineman.
Tampa Bay’s offensive line coach Bob Bostad coached Carimi when he was at Wisconsin (he was also OL Coach in Madison). So maybe he’ll fit in better there. However, it wasn’t just the poor play of Carimi that made him expendable; the Bears truly beefed up their O Line this offseason.
Chicago signed star left tackle Jermon Bushrod and decent to ok guard Matt Slauson. They also took guard Kyle Long from the Oregon Ducks with the 20th overall pick in April’s NFL draft.
