Jake Golic, son of ESPN’s Mike Golic, is leaving Notre Dame and will join the Cincinnati Bearcats for the 2013 season. The transfer will mark the end of the Irish football family legacy dating back to the 70’s.
Bob Golic, the uncle of Jake, was an All American at Notre Dame and a member of the 1977 National Championship team. Jake’s father, Mike, graduated from Notre Dame in 1985 before his NFL and broadcasting career. Jake’s brother, Mike Golic Jr., has just graduated from Notre Dame and is now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
As a tight end, Jake was never able to crack the starting lineup in South Bend and will be eligible to play right away for Cincinnati.
Although the transfer currently marks the end of the Golic presence on the Irish football team, it does not mark the end of Golic athletes at Notre Dame. Jake’s younger sister, Sydney, is going to be a sophomore on the Irish swimming team.
So what will become of the Notre Dame offensive line now? There will be a lot of turnover for the Irish next year. A few Irish seniors have graduated. And the holes in the OL were definitely exposed in the loss college football national title game versus the Alabama Crimson Tide.
