What’s ex-NBA Referee Tim Donaghy up to Today?

Welcome to part two of four in our exclusive with ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy. You may wonder what he’s been up to since his release from prison four years ago. Well he did some fantastic work on Deadspin for the 2010 and 2011 Finals. He pointed out numerous blown calls for each game, quarter-by-quarter. I suggest you check it out.

He reportedly makes $5,000 per speaking engagement.

You can also check him out on Twitter, and read his Twitter bio.

Fan Mail from ex-NBA Referee Tim Donaghy (Probably)

You remember ex NBA referee Tim Donaghy, correct? He’s been doing some fantastic work on Deadspin. I suggest you check it out. He also writes for The Sports Connection

In case you don’t recall the name, here’s a brief dossier from Wikipedia. (And remember it’s Wikipedia, so please take this not with a grain, but instead an entire truckload of salt):

“During his career in the NBA, Donaghy officiated in 772 regular season games and 20 playoff games. Donaghy resigned from the league on July 9, 2007 before reports of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for allegations that he bet on games that he officiated during his last two seasons and that he made calls affecting the point spread in those games.

On August 15, 2007, Donaghy pleaded guilty to two federal charges related to the investigation. However, he could face more charges at the state level if it is determined that he deliberately miscalled individual games. Donaghy was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison on July 29, 2008. He served 11 months in a federal prison camp in Pensacola, Florida to spend the remainder of his sentence in a halfway house, but was sent back to jail in August for violating his release terms. He was released on November 4, 2009 after serving out his sentence.”

Well, Mr. Donaghy (or perhaps someone impersonating him) reached out to me last night, with the following email

Jenn Sterger to FINALLY Discuss Brett Favre Sexting Saga Publicly

The time has come for one of the biggest media sensations of 2010. The Jenn Sterger-Deadspin-Brett Favre sexting saga will rekindle itself in the NFL consciousness as Sterger, the former New York Jets in stadium hostess will go public with her side of the story.

It was very difficult to not type “pubic” in that previous sentence where I wrote “public.” An honest mistake given that the subject matter is dong pictures of the former Jets, Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers QB. This exclusive will be the first time she’s talked since the scandal broke.

Jenn Sterger Sexting Saga: Story that Possibly Dies Today?

So the day after the New York Jets got utterly destroyed by their bitterest of division rivals, the New England Patriots, more negative publicity surrounding the Jets organization. The supposed workplace filled with sexual harassment news complements the incompetence they showed playing football in Foxborough, Massachusetts last night during the NFL’s marquee regular season game.

Despite the story breaking in October, (well actually breaking in August, just no one paid attention to Deadspin’s story back then, dispute Deadspin being a very high traffic blog owned by Gawker Media) the Jenn Sterger-Brett Favre-Sexting Saga still rolls on strong. In case you forgot, here’s a quick refresher.

And now today, according to TMZ.com:

Favre could get word any day now about potential punishment for allegedly sending Jenn Sterger photos of his penis while he was with the New York Jets … and she was working as the team’s stadium host.

Sterger’s manager, Phil Reese, believes she “provided extensive evidence that irrefutably proves there was harassment” — and adds, “No matter what happens Jenn has all legal remedies, including going public … if the NFL doesn’t clear her name.”

Jenn Sterger Finally Meets with NFL Regarding Favre Situation

jenn sterger

Well, FINALLY! It’s about time former New York Jets sideline host Jenn Sterger met with the NFL to discuss the sexting “scandal” of Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre. You remember that story, correct?

It broke well over a month ago. Actually, the story that ignited a media firestorm truly broke back in August, but the mainstream media was just too snooty to report on something published on a “blog” back then.

But we live in a Brave New World today, and Deadspin sort of played the role of Woodward and Bernstein (in a sports blog sense) on this one. And a lot has happened to Sterger during her time outside the limelight. She lost both her gig (her show on Versus, “The Daily Line” was canceled) and her title as Crown Princess of NFL Trashiness. Cowboys Stadium Lap Dance Girl (see video here) has supplanted her. At least in my humble little opinion.

Predictions on How Favre-Sterger Sexting Scandal Will End

jenn sterger

About 3-4 days ago, the NFL said they were in the midst of their investigation into Brett Favre’s alleged sexting of Jenn Sterger, and that they would have a ruling on the Minnesota Vikings QB in 7-10 days. Therefore, as of Thursday October 28th, the sports media story of the year (originally broken by Deadspin, NOT ESPN) will all be over with, and we’ll have closure.

At “press time,” Sterger was considering offers of financial consideration in exchange for her silence. Favre admits to phoning Sterger and asking her to come over, and nothing more as of yet. Deanna Favre is saying nothing except that she has faith, and the New York Jets massage therapists are nowhere to be found.

So here’s how I think it’ll play out. And for those of you that bet on sport, please take these predictions with a grain of salt. Actually take them with a whole truckload of salt:

Favre Wrangler Parody Video: SNL Actually Does Something Funny!

favre wrangler

For years, I’ve said that Saturday Night Live has been show executed like the jokes were written by and geared towards 13-year-old girls. Nothing against the Hannah Montana worshiping set, but SNL has been so unfunny and dull for so long…unless it was a music video with Andy Samberg. His compilation with Justin Timberlake pretty much owned the internet in December 2006.

Likewise in 2008, when Samberg teamed up with Jorma Taccone.

And with their take on the current Sterger-Sexting-Favre scandal, SNL once again rmeinds us that they have this penis humor thing down pat.

Ever wonder why Wrangler keeps running those ads of the Minnesota Vikings QB non-stop? The blue-jeans company might reconsider how ridiculous they look after seeing this.

Btw, supposedly Jenn Sterger‘s agent has claimed they’ll take hush money, and Favre has admitted to phoning her, but not pics. So the matter should get more definitive this week, and the NFL is hoping it’s all resolved within 7-10 days.

BREAKING: Brett Favre Attempted to Contact Jenn Sterger Last Year

Like I said a week ago, the Jenn StergerBrett Favre NFL investigation into the sexting scandal is just getting warmed up. Usually, we as a nation lose interest in any story in about 7-10 days, but it appears this one is going to go all Tiger Woods on us. If you’re sick of it, well dig in because it’s going to outlast the usual media cycle.

If you’re a Minnesota Vikings fan, brace yourself, because the distractions are only just getting started.

Deanna Favre Speaks, but Mostly Silent on Sexting Scandal

Some have referred to Jenn Sterger as the victim in the Brett Favre alleged sexting scandal, and to some extent that’s true. No one wants to be harassed/the recipient of unwanted creepiness, but the real victim here is actually Brett Favre’s wife Deanna. This must be a very difficult time for her as the embarrassment she’s probably feeling must be beyond belief.

Deanna Favre was interviewed today on “Good Morning America” about a book she co-authored with Shane Stanford titled “The Cure for the Chronic Life,” which is about getting past hard times and patterns of unhealthy behavior.

Deanna has admitted publicly in recent years that she’s well aware of Favre’s cheating, and once threatened to leave him because of it. (And yes, it made me queasy just now to link out to a Rupert Murdoch owned publication. I’ll need to shower four times today to clean that filth off!)

Jenn Sterger Releases Statement, not Pursuing Sexual Harrasment Case

As NFL writer Peter King reported earlier this week, Jenn Sterger will not likely pursue sexual harassment charges regarding the Brett Favre sexting scandal. Of course, proving that harassment at work could be difficult, as most sexual harassment cases involve situations that revolve around the chain of command in the workplace, and abuses of power. The New York Jets will try to circumvent that claim by saying Sterger is an independent contractor, not a full-time employee. And also that Favre’s position with the company had no direct power over Sterger’s position with the organization.

Of course, harassment can also include repeated unwanted sexual advances, an uncomfortable work environment, inappropriate workplace behavior etc. And there’s plenty of evidence there. But it appears Sterger will not go that route. She’s been extremely silent and stayed of the limelight this week. She even cancelled her public appearance yesterday at the local Chicago bar and grille “The Bull and Bear.”

And she has declined comment on Deadspin, the Minnesota Vikings QB, sexting etc. until yesterday.

Favre Sexual Harassment Scandal Going all the Way to the top?

It appears that Jenn Sterger was just the tip of the iceberg. If you’re getting sick of hearing about Sterger, Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre, Deadspin, sexting etc. well that’s just too bad, because we’re (to quote Al Pacino in “Scent of a Woman”) “just getting warmed up.”

Today, the media is buzzing about the fact that two more independent contractors hired by the New York Jets, a pair of massage therapists, saved the voicemail evidence that will damn Favre, and may be willing to come forward with it.

In other words, the NFL already has a Ben Roethlisberger type situation on their hands, but it could blow up into a full-fledged Tiger Woods. As we learned with Woods, once a couple of women come out of the woodwork, many others can quickly soon follow.

Favre-Sterger Sexting Scandal Achieves Mainstream Media Coverage

jenn sterger

I really wasn’t sure if the Brett Favre-Jenn Sterger sexting scandal would get picked up the mainstream media. Sure, it’s plenty newsworthy, but given what I know of the sports promotional firm known as ESPN, and the horrible precedent they set within the industry, I figured the MSM might drop the ball once again. I thought it could be the sports media equivalent of the news media handling the run-up to the Iraq war.

Remember that? In 2002-03, the media establishment’s coverage of the upcoming Iraq invasion might be summed by this sentence:

“Everything Bush/Cheney/Condi/Rummy says is 100% right, never to be questioned, and if you don’t want to go to war this exact second you are a terrorist/communist/nazi/spineless pansy.”

And since the Minnesota Vikings QB is the closest thing we have to a sacrosanct omnipotent being in the NFL/sports, I was worried it would happen again.

Glad I’m wrong.
