2012 NFL Draft – Top Offensive Lineman

Offensive Tackle

1. Matt Kalil, USC (6-6, 306): With great size and strength, Kalil certainly looks like an NFL tackle. There’s nothing about his game that disproves the eye test. Kalil has a [Read more…]

Auburn Gets All-American Transfer from Illinois; Fullback Jay Prosch

jay-prosch

It’s certainly transfer season in college football, kind of like a mini NFL free agent signing period. Notre Dame landed the top QB recruit in Gunner Kiel yesterday, and Illinois sophomore Jay Prosch transferred to the Auburn Tigers.

Prosch is ranked among the top fullback prospects in the 2014 NFL Draft class. The move that will allow Prosch to be closer to his family in the Mobile, Ala., area, including his ailing mother. Prosch was named a first-team All-American by Pro Football Weekly on Dec. 12 and was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree this year.

SEC Football: Oversigning (“Cheating”)=More Championships

auburn_cam_newton

As Wes Bynum’s 19-yarder sailed through the desert air to split the uprights and down Oregon in the Tostitos BCS national championship there was no question Auburn was the best team in college football.  There was also no doubt which conference was at the top of the summit.  The cheers of “S-E-C” that rained down like ticker-tape on the Auburn players and coaches was evidence enough.  Fans chanting the conference’s moniker knew, and so did the rest of the nation, the SEC, with victories in the last five national championships, was college football’s king.

Fans, writers and even coaches have sought to explain this domination.  Many pegged blazing SEC speed as the reason, asserting that kids from Florida and Georgia just have better wheels than farm-boys from Ohio and Wisconsin.  For years, that reasoning has been widely accepted, but lately a new explanation has bubbled to the surface: oversigning.

Analyzing the Minnesota Vikings Depth Chart

The addition of Donovan McNabb and Michael Jenkins on the offensive side of the ball have been the two most notable positive amendments during the offseason. The most newsworthy departure is undoubtedly the exit by offensive lineman and consistent Pro Bowler Bryant McKinnie.

After taking a look at the depth chart on the team’s official site, it is puzzling to note that Joe Webb has taken a stronghold on the number two quarterback position. All the fans heard on draft day was how smart and crafty Christian Ponder was. It’s hard to fathom that we would be third at this time then if Cam Newton is starting in Carolina. The Auburn product couldn’t even name a play that he liked when prompted. I am shocked that there would be hyperbole surrounding a prospect on draft day!

Superstar Auburn Duo Declare for Draft, Top 5 NFL Picks?

fairleycam_newton

Big news regarding the NFL Draft; two underclassmen from the national title team in college football; announced there going pro.

With Auburn, the conversation always begins with their QB Cam Newton, the reigning Heisman winner who was dominant on the offensive side of the ball for the Tigers. But they have a player on the opposite side of the ball who is has been just as dominant this fall; and who started the year in obscurity much like Newton. That’s Nick Fairley, who may end up getting picked ahead of Newton.

Auburn Football Dominant! Auburn Basketball Not So Much

Auburn Cheerleaders

Call it the yin and yang, synergy, or perhaps the great universal balancing act of the greater cosmos, but Auburn University college football and Auburn University college basketball are polar opposites.

Indeed the school in Alabama is essentially the even Stephen of college sports when you weigh Cam Newton, Nick Fairley and the football national title up against the pathetic train wreck that is their men’s basketball team.

99 in 99: #95 Auburn Tigers

Auburn Cheerleaders

UPDATED: Friday August 20, 2010

Our first update to one of our teams in the Sports Bank‘s 99 team college basketball preview in 99 days.  Auburn took a major hit with news that two expected impact freshmen did not qualify academically and will not enroll at the university.  If I could, I would easily move the Tigers down to the bottom spot in this series that ranks the 72 power conference teams and top 27 mid-majors.
