Super Bowl XLIX could be the last time that Darrelle Revis suits up for the New England Patriots. Indeed it’s for real- Revis Island could be relocating away from Cape Cold and Martha’s Vineyard. (and Nantucket, can’t leave them out).
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on the Darrelle Revis situation (watch the video here).
“Just talking to people on both sides of the issue, everyone hopes that this is not Darrelle Revis ’ last game with the New England Patriots, mainly just because of the way he played. In short, Revis has been exactly what the Patriots hoped for when they signed him to what was basically a one-year, $12 million contract.
[He is] playing at an All-Pro level and they universally viewed [him] inside the organization as the one guy who makes this defense go. So while it is functionally a one-year, $12 million contract, it’s not actually that. In fact, Revis has a $20 million option that the Patriots can trigger after the season.
Now the hope from both sides is to get though the season, make it to the Super Bowl – which they’ve done –, win the Super Bowl – which of course they have a chance to do on Sunday – and then begin talking on a long-term extension that would keep Darrelle Revis in a Patriots uniform for the balance of his career.
What I am told is that if the Patriots cannot work out a long-term deal with Darrelle Revis, they are not opposed to actually just paying the $20 million and going into next season with him on a one-year deal.”
