Chicago Bears WR Corps: Former Buckeyes Dane Sanzenbacher In?

When it comes to Chicago Bears wide receivers news this week, it’s all about former Dallas Cowboys wideout and alleged #1 receiver Roy Williams. He’s done absolutely nothing since he got here, and is clearly out of shape. He could lose his starting gig.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Bears’ receivers coach Darryl Drake sent a strong message to Williams on Wednesday, succinctly stating the ex-Cowboy is “not where he needs to be”, and could be replaced by Johnny Knox in the starting lineup if he doesn’t improve his conditioning and on-field performance. We’ll see how that all plays out. But what about the undrafted rookie free agent, Dane Sanzenbacher, the former Ohio State Buckeyes captain? Chances are he could defy all odds and make the cut this fall in Chicago.

Jay Cutler has even called him a “mini Wes Welker.”

It’s easy to compare a small white NFL receiver to Welker, but don’t expect Sanzenbacher to ever put up that kind of production from the slot in Mike Martz’s offense. The 5-11 180 Toledo Ohio product has shown precise route running and versatility at Bears training camp in Bourbonnais. And Cutler did go to him a few times in the Giants preseason game.

Sanzenbacher impressed the college football media during his career in Columbus with his boy band look and pop star wardrobe. Aside from his volo ties, those were kind of broke. But anyways…

…his ability to pick up the offense at several wide-receiver positions, means he’ll could be the fifth guy behind Williams, Knox, Devin Hester and Earl Bennett.

”I think we’ve made him play three or four different positions. He’s really done a good job in the slot as our nickel receiver, and he plays ‘X’ too. He’s been very steady,” Bears Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz has said this preseason.
