Chicago Bears cut ex-Buckeye Dane Sanzenbacher

Dane Sanzenbacher

The Chicago Bears have decided to part ways with their homeless man’s version of Wes Welker, a guy known for wearing bolo ties while in college at Ohio State.

Sanzenbacher played in just four games this year totaling a WHOPPING one reception for seven yards. He had a better rookie year last season, appearing in 16 games, 27 receptions on 54 targets, 276 yards and three touchdowns.

Stock Watch: Chicago Bears Training Camp

Stephen Paea

I’ll admit it: it’s way too early to predict who will make the final roster and who will be on the outside looking in come September. It’s only the middle of week 2 in Bourbonnais.

But a few players have been making headlines at Bears camp for different reasons. Let’s take a look at who’s getting camp off on the right foot and who might be on the bubble after a poor start.

Chicago Bears Training Camp Position Battles: Wide Receivers

Brandon Marshall making a one-handed catch

Position battles are always a focal point of training camp. This summer in Bourbonnais will be no different for the Chicago Bears.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll dissect the ongoing battles at each position and analyze the talent on the depth chart.

First up will be the wide receiving corps, which has become an incredibly deep and athletic group under new GM Phil Emery.

Chicago Bears Need to Take a Flier on Terrell Owens

Ok, so no one showed up at Terrell Owens‘ NFL scout workout day. No team is interested. Aw, poor baby, so sad, too bad. But if if and buts were candy and nuts then we’d all have a merry christmas.

The Chicago Bears aren’t really in a position to lose much here. TO is desperate for a gig anywhere, so the asking price will be low. The Monsters of the Midway won’t have to worry much about cap space or draft picks. It’s low-risk, high reward. And at this point, it’s scrap heap- kind of like the WR version of the Jeff George signing a few years ago.

The Bears don’t have a true #1 receiver. Their go-to-guy on third down is a little white guy who was playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes a year ago at this time. Dane Sanzenbacher isn’t a poor man’s Wes Welker. He’s a homeless man’s Wes Welker.

Keys for Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears Monday Night Football

There is a buzz in Motown that hasn’t been experienced since the Pistons and Red Wings ruled the roost years past. The Detroit Lions not only get to play on Monday night, but they also get to take on the Monsters of the Midway-their rivals in the NFC North.

There are some obvious points of contention that will decide the game with the Chicago Bears tonight. The Lions are about a touchdown favorite at the betting windows, but they have been very fortunate with some of the outcomes in their previous contests.

Five Lessons We Learned From the Saints’ Beatdown of the Bears

After a rousing Week 1 victory over the Atlanta Falcons at Soldier Field, the Chicago Bears headed down to the Superdome in New Orleans to battle the Saints in another NFC South matchup. All of the confidence they brought with them south of the Mason-Dixon line didn’t mean diddly squat, however, as the Saints picked apart the Bears’ weakened secondary and sacked Jay Cutler six times en route to a 30-13 victory.

Chicago Bears WR Corps: Former Buckeyes Dane Sanzenbacher In?

sanzenbacher

When it comes to Chicago Bears wide receivers news this week, it’s all about former Dallas Cowboys wideout and alleged #1 receiver Roy Williams. He’s done absolutely nothing since he got here, and is clearly out of shape. He could lose his starting gig.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Bears’ receivers coach Darryl Drake sent a strong message to Williams on Wednesday, succinctly stating the ex-Cowboy is “not where he needs to be”, and could be replaced by Johnny Knox in the starting lineup if he doesn’t improve his conditioning and on-field performance. (h/t to Helmet2Helmet)

We’ll see how that all plays out. But what about the undrafted rookie free agent, Dane Sanzenbacher, the former Ohio State Buckeyes captain? Chances are he could defy all odds and make the cut this fall in Chicago.

Jay Cutler has even called him a “mini Wes Welker.”

Terrelle Pryor – Championship Quarterback?

There’s a question that has hung over the 2010 Ohio State Buckeyes like a yellow cloud since April. The question is still fraught with significance in late October as the team prepares for another back alley brawl with the Wisconsin Badgers. Reporters spring the question on every member of the Ohio State football program: Jim Tressel, Dane Sanzenbacher, Brandon Saine, Cameron Heyward, Devin Barclay. After the games or on media day, no one is spared the question, “How do feel about the development of Terrelle Pryor as a quarterback?”

#2 Ohio State-Illinois: the Brutally Honest Game Preview

jim tressel

The last three times Illinois beat Ohio State: 2007, 2001, 1999, it was in Columbus. For some reason, the Illini play the Buckeyes much better in the Buckeye state than they do at home. The last time they beat Ohio State in Champaign, Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer were at the peak of their popularity.

Whenever Illinois is having a good season, they seem to beat the Buckeyes, as they have a 9-11 record against
OSU dating back to 1988. Only Michigan has more victories over Ohio State during the span, posting an 11-10-1
record.

However, this year is not a (as 50 Cent would say) “Champagne Campaign.

There is one thing Illinois can claim over #2 OSU- a character on the ABC sitcom “Modern Family” wore a Juice Williams jersey for an entire episode last season. So until Courtney Cox rocks a kid size Terrelle Pryor jersey on “Cougar Town”- advantage Illini.

Buckeyes DeVier Posey: Terrelle Pryor’s Favorite Target

devier_posey

Ohio State quarterback and Heisman candidate Terrelle Pryor has said he’s looking for junior wideout Devier Posey one-on-one, and every time he sees that matchup, he’s taking it.

“He’s grown a lot, he sees matchups, he sees coverages and he goes to his best options,” the 6-2, 213 pound receiver from Cincinnati said about his QB, and his targeting on him.

“So we talk about it: don’t have your mind made up in the huddle. And he’s taking that, absorbing that and becoming better at it and reading on the run,” Posey continued.

Ohio State 2010: Preseason Jitters

This Thursday, at about 7:15 p.m. on September 2, the 2010 Ohio State Football Buckeyes will rush from the depths of Ohio Stadium and onto the Horseshoes’s FieldTurf for their opening game battle against the Marshall Thundering Herd. For the faithful, there will be goose bumps. For the rest of the college football community (and the Ohio faithful too), there will be a torrential downpour of expectations for the Buckeyes to play up to. And for many Ohio State fans, that’s a little scary.
