The Chicago Cubs made some roster cuts today, trimming the group from 40 to 36 players. Right-handed pitcher Justin Berg and left-handed pitcher Scott Maine were optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Two non-roster invitees with a wealth of major league experience have also been assigned to minor league camp.

Right-handed pitchers Angel Guzman and Todd Wellemeyer were cut. The former was once a very highly regarded prospect who spent some time in the starting rotation, the latter a reliever who same major time out of the bullpen during the team’s most recent glory days. Well, regular season glory days anyway.c

The spring training roster now consists of 16 pitchers (one non-roster invitee), four catchers, 10 infielders (four non-roster invitees) and six outfielders (one non-roster invitee).
