Manchester United and their striker Romelu Lukaku has made it clear that he wants a controversial chant about him to cease. The song, intended to praise him by referring to the size of his penis, has been condemned by both Kick It Out, a progressive football activist group, and Manchester United football club.

Today, following MUFC’s 1-0 win at Southampton, a match in which Lukaku himself scored the only goal, United said they are going to crack down on those who persist in singing the offensive song.

MUFC are seeking footage from the St. Mary’s away end which would help identify the perpetrators.

“The club and player have been clear in asking for an end to the chant,” a United spokesperson said.

“The club has worked with relevant bodies and supporters groups in trying to eradicate any offensive behaviour and will take further action against individuals if this continues.

“The club is in discussion with the police and has asked for CCTV footage from Southampton and will try to identify those who disrespected the player’s wishes not to sing the song.”

Some have deemed the Lukaku chant to be racist, but obviously that wasn’t enough to put an end to it; perhaps this will. Chelsea have also had issues lately with an offensive chant, but they successfully got the fans to change the words.
