Defenders Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw were surprisingly a part of the Manchester United travel squad for their UEFA Champions League group stage clash at Benfica. Both flew out with the team Monday afternoon to Lisbon, Portugal, but it would be a massive shock if either player actually features on Wednesday night.
Marcos Rojo suffered a knee ligament injury against Anderlecht in the UEFA Europa League last season and the Argentine is still awaiting his first action of this campaign.
Luke Shaw played the full 90 minutes for the reserve side against West Ham United yesterday, but he’s only featured for the senior team once this season, in the League Cup rout of Burton Albion. The young Englishman is still recovering from the injury he suffered against Swansea City at the end of last season.
As expected, midfielders Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini did not make the trip, but the official club site says that the last two names in that trio might still be in contention and we won’t know until tomorrow when manager Jose Mourinho holds his news conference. The same could be said for Eric Bailly- he may not feature in this one, but we won’t know until tomorrow.
Bailly injured his groin while on international duty last week.
