Liverpool and AS Roma came together to give us one of the most memorable UEFA Champions League semifinal ties of all time this past season. Perhaps they will pair up to give us a really significant transfer deal as well. This particular transaction, if it happens, would be record setting as Roma shot stopper Alisson Becker could become the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.
According to multiple reports, Liverpool bid £62 million for the Brazilian, but no formal agreement has been reached yet.
According to the BBC, the Serie A side is holding out for £66 million. The current Liverpool bid, when converted to euros, is 70 million ($81 million), and that is 17 million more than what Juventus paid Parma to acquire Gianluigi Buffon in 2001; the current goalie record.
The Premier League record for a keeper was eclipsed just last summer when Manchester City paid 40 million euros to Benfica for Ederson. Current Liverpool #1 Loris Karius had the worst game of his life in the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid, and Liverpool have been on a mission to acquire an upgrade ever since.
This big and bold bid conveys just how ambitious they really are about getting this objective accomplished. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has given a couple public votes of confidence in Karius, but the goalkeeper continues making mistakes in preseason.
It’s been reported that Real Madrid are also targeting Alisson.
