It’s been a brutally awful international break for Liverpool, as several of their biggest star players have been bit by the injury bug. Some term it the FIFA virus, and it certainly infected the Merseyside club. Sadio Mane was the third of four Reds players to encounter injury problems while on international duty this week, joining Naby Keita, Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah.
Mane, during training with the Senegal national team on Monday, suffered a hand injury that was severe enough that it required a trip to the hospital.
Reports on Monday indicated that the injury was in fact a broken thumb.
LiverpoolFC.com issued an update on Wednesday, saying that Mane underwent surgery to treat the injury.
“The surgery, conducted at a north-west hospital and supervised by club medics, was successful,” the statement reads.
“Mane’s recovery will be monitored over the next couple of days ahead of the Reds’ return to action at Huddersfield Town on Saturday.”
Well, he’s certainly a doubt for the Reds clash against the Terriers this weekend, but the club is refusing to rule him out completely. Perhaps we’ll learn more during Jurgen Klopp’s news conference on Friday.
