It has certainly been a week for Manchester United summer transfer window central defender targets speaking out about their situations. Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng joined Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld in discussing why they stayed put at their current clubs.
Boateng confirmed what had been reported earlier this summer- his rejecting the chance to join United actually included a phone call to Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho himself.
The 30-year-old said in an interview with German newspaper Bild:
“I had enquiries from Paris-Saint Germain and Manchester United, and I considered them. Not because I wanted to leave Bayern Munich by all means. It was no escape, but rather the thrill of a new challenge”
“I feel completely contented at Bayern one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
In addition to Boateng and Alderweireld, United also missed out on Leicester City and England star Harry Maguire, who just signed a contract extension last week.
A move for Barcelona man Yerry Mina didn’t happen either. Boateng also explained during the interview his telephone conversation with Mourinho.
“I phoned Jose Mourinho and told him that his interest honoured me and thanked him that he put his back into United for me,” Boateng added.
“I explained to him my reasons for not joining. It’s difficult to leave FC Bayern. Everything has to fall in place to top this club, if I do it.”
