That might be overstating it a little, but watch enough Buffalo Bills road games and you start to understand the argument. There are certain Sundays when the television broadcast cuts to the crowd and you have to remind yourself which team is actually playing at home.
Miami is one of the better examples.
Bills-Dolphins already comes with decades of AFC East history. Add South Florida weather, a destination people actually want to spend a weekend in and a sizable population of Bills fans who already live in Florida, and this is not exactly a difficult road trip to sell.
For Buffalo fans, Miami can become part rivalry game, part reunion and part vacation.
And Bills Mafia was practically built for that combination.
Bills Mafia Doesn’t Need Much of an Introduction
At this point, explaining Bills Mafia to an NFL fan feels a little unnecessary.
You know the jerseys. You know the tailgates. You probably know about the folding tables.
But the viral stuff can obscure the more interesting part of the story.
Buffalo has built one of the NFL’s most recognizable fan communities, and that community isn’t confined to Western New York.
Bills fans move away from Buffalo. Their kids grow up somewhere else. People who have never lived in Western New York become fans. Former Buffalo residents end up scattered around the country and somehow still organize Sunday around the Bills.
Put enough of those people together and an NFL road game starts looking considerably less like an away game.
Bills Backers Are a Big Part of the Equation
The Bills Backers network might be the best evidence that Buffalo fandom was designed to travel.

Bills Backers groups give Buffalo fans gathering places outside Western New York, and they can be found across the country, including here in Florida.
That changes the math when Buffalo comes to Miami.
Not everybody wearing Bills gear at Hard Rock Stadium necessarily flew down from Buffalo on Friday.
Some live in South Florida.
Some are former Western New Yorkers.
Some belong to local Bills Backers groups.
Others absolutely did fly down from Buffalo, and if the game falls during the right part of the schedule, nobody is going to blame them for trading Western New York weather for a couple days in South Florida.
It all comes together on game day.
The traveling Bills fans meet the Florida Bills fans, and suddenly the visiting section isn’t much of a section anymore.
Miami Is Almost Too Easy of a Bills Road Trip
There are NFL road trips you make because you want to see your team.
Then there are NFL road trips where the destination does half the recruiting.
Miami obviously falls into the second category.
You can stay around Fort Lauderdale or Hollywood. You can spend a day on Miami Beach. You can build restaurants, nightlife or the beach into the trip and still have the football game as the centerpiece of the weekend.
And then there is the opponent.
The Bills aren’t coming south for some random interconference matchup.
They’re coming to play Miami.
That matters.
Bills-Dolphins Still Feels Like a Rivalry
NFL rivalries change.
Teams go through different eras. Divisions become lopsided. Players leave. Coaches change. Sometimes a matchup that once mattered starts living primarily on old highlight reels.

The tailgate mentality definitely travels.
Bills Mafia doesn’t suddenly become reserved because the game is being played a thousand miles from Orchard Park.
And when a traveling fan base meets an established population of Bills supporters already living in the destination, things can get interesting.
Miami is one of those places.
A Bills-Dolphins game can feel less like Buffalo fans visiting an opposing city and more like two fan bases showing up to claim the same territory for an afternoon.
Eventually the Miami Weekend Has to Become Game Day
Of course, at some point the beach has to give way to football.
This is where visiting fans discover an important geographical detail:
Hard Rock Stadium is in Miami Gardens.
Not South Beach.
Not downtown Miami.
Miami Gardens.
That distinction becomes considerably more important a few hours before kickoff.
If you’re staying in Miami Beach, Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale or elsewhere around South Florida, you still have to get yourself to the stadium along with tens of thousands of other people trying to do essentially the same thing.
That’s when the road trip stops being about where you’re eating Friday night and starts being about routes, traffic, parking and how early you really need to leave.

Traffic builds around the stadium. Police can control intersections and access points. Certain approaches get crowded. A navigation app can tell you where Hard Rock Stadium is, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it understands everything happening around the stadium two hours before a Dolphins game.

So if your definition of preparing for a football game involves considerably more than getting out of the car and walking toward the gate, check where you’re parking before you arrive.
Buffalo traditions can travel.
Local parking rules remain undefeated.
The Bigger Story Is How NFL Fandom Travels
Buffalo is a particularly visible example of something that has changed across professional sports.
A team’s fan base isn’t necessarily located where the team is anymore.
People move.
Families move.
Kids inherit teams from their parents.
Streaming and national television make following a team from another state easy.
Social media makes finding other fans even easier.

That’s why looking only at how many fans travel from Buffalo doesn’t tell the whole story.

The tailgating is part of it. The loyalty is part of it. The charity campaigns are part of it. The folding tables are certainly part of it.
But the community is what makes the whole thing portable.
Bills Backers keep that community connected thousands of miles from Buffalo. Road games give everyone an excuse to bring it together.
And Miami gives them a particularly good excuse.
It’s an AFC East rivalry in South Florida, surrounded by beaches, warm weather and a sizable group of Bills fans who don’t need to get on an airplane to participate.
So when Buffalo comes to Hard Rock Stadium, it isn’t just another road game.
It’s a road trip.
It’s a reunion.
It’s a rivalry game.
And for a few hours in Miami Gardens, it’s a little bit of Buffalo in South Florida.
