Will Heisman winner Derrick Henry be a 1st round pick?

Call your broker and tell him to buy as many shares of Derrick Henry NFL Draft stock now that he took home the Heisman on Saturday night. He’s a first round lock, right? After all this was the year of the running back in college football and he was the best back in the nation.

Actually, running backs are devalued these days on NFL Draft night and the Alabama Crimson Tide superstar is inspiring mixed opinions.

It’s time to “talk to Chuck.” Call Charles Schwab and tell him to sell all your shares of Derrick Henry NFL Draft stock.

Jay Glazer, on FOX NFL Sunday discussed Derrick Henry’s draft stock after winning the Heisman Trophy:

“I really can’t think of a time, except for Tim Tebow, when NFL offices and GM’s were so split and all over the place about a guy’s draft stock after winning the Heisman. Some look at him as a top 15 player while others said he is a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Another college note, teams are putting out feelers for Jim Mora, the UCLA coach, to return to the NFL.”

Tebow is a great example, but it’s actually quite common for Heisman winners to be all over the map when it comes to later NFL success. Winning the most famous individual trophy in sport is not a predictor of pro success. Most mock drafts don’t have Derrick Henry in the first round (here’s our mock for what it’s worth), and the only running back who consistently shows up is Ohio State’s Ezekiel Elliott. The Buckeye back will likely be the first one selected at the position in 2016.

In 2017, Henry’s SEC rival, Leonard Fournette, will be the first off the board. He could be a transcendent type of running back prospect. He’s a much more sure fire prospect than Derrick Henry.
