There has been a great deal of debate in Chicago on which team the Hawks would rather face. We now know officially that the Chicago Blackhawks will in fact face the Detroit Red Wings. It’s debatable which team the Hawks would have had a better match up with, but for them it’s win, win.
The Blackhawks completed a season sweep of both teams, 3-0-0 against the Sharks, and 4-0-0 against the Red Wings. Most fans and analysts have just been going off those numbers, as if the extra win makes the Wings an easier team to face.
The fact is, the Wings are red hot leading up to Sunday night’s game and having advanced, have colossal momentum going into round 2. Probably not enough to beat the Hawks, but enough to make them a tougher opponent than the Sharks. Their leaders, Datsyuk and Zetterberg are playing out of their minds.
Sure the Sharks swept Vancouver, but this postseason, the Canucks embodied a sad, gutless team the likes of which I’ve never seen in professional sports. Also, the Sharks simple dump and goon hockey would again be easily overpowered by the Blackhawks.
If you want the Hawks to have an easier round 2, you should be glad the Wings are coming to town.
