Casey McGehee’s Knee Could Have Cost Him Stellar Season

Casey McGehee doesn’t mind having 26 RBIs on the month as of Friday. It’s the most in the majors in August and is several shy of a few club hitting records, namely Gorman Thomas (32 in 1979) and Cecil Cooper (32 in 1980). It’s also an impressive number considering that at this time last year, McGehee was just trying to keep his knee serviceable.

“There were days that even just running out to my position before the game wasn’t fun,” McGehee said.

McGehee had an important decision to make in the offseason. He chose arthroscopic surgery to cleanup his right knee, an option that gave him a better chance to return to his regularly-scheduled playing time.

“I just didn’t want to be in a position where I would be sitting around rehabbing for 10 months,” McGehee said. “That just didn’t appeal to me.”

McGehee said he had an option or two that was more experimental in nature, but that he didn’t want to take the risk of the unknown. His physicians and surgeons tell him he may have to return occasionally for additional cleanup and maintenance, but that the knee should hold up for the long-haul.

“Now I can just focus on playing rather than figuring out how to get my knee ready,” McGehee said. “I don’t really even think about it because it doesn’t hurt me. I’m definitely glad I went that route.”
