Real Madrid are champions of Europe once again, and their super season has seen them blow past their rivals Barcelona to become the world’s most powerful football brand. This according to the valuation consultancy experts at Brand Finance, who conduct an annual study calculating the power and value of the world’s leading football club brands.

That results of the that study were released today, and it found Real’s Brand Strength Index score up from 94.6 to 96.1 this year, edging out Barcelona on 95.4.

The fierce rivalry of El Clásico, the twice annual match that sees the two La Liga powers clash, has helped serve to create brand value that you don’t see in Germany, France, England or Italy rivals.

After claiming yet another La Liga title (their 33rd, a record high) and a 12th Champions League victory (again another record), Real Madrid continue to keep their juggernaut rolling. They will be the opponent for the MLS All-Star Game on August 2nd at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

“I think association with the team that was noted by FIFA as the team of the last century is special,” said Chicago Fire General Manager Nelson Rodriguez, who’s club is hosting the exhibition match.

However, while Real Madrid has an unparalleled reputation on the pitch, and status as the world’s most powerful brand, it is not number one in brand value. The same study found Manchester United to be worth $1.733 billion, topping second place Real Madrid at $1.419 billion.
