Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has recovered from an ankle problem that kept him out of training this week with Belgium. He should almost certainly be ready to face Liverpool on Saturday. Belgian manager Roberto Martinez rested him this week, but maintained that Lukaku was fit to play in World Cup qualifiers if needs be.
He wasn’t needed as Belgium already qualified for Russia 2018.
Lukaku is United’s leading scorer and their most dangerous weapon in attack this season. He’s started the year on an absolutely torrid pace, and hence the added layer of concern for his health in this rivalry game of all games.
Jan Vertonghen, who became Belgium’s most capped player with 97 appearances this week, verifies that Lukaku looks fully recovered and ready to go.
The defender for Tottenham Hotspur said: “The goal he got against Cyprus was so typical, a ball in behind and he brushed defenders off and smashed the ball into the net. I am sure he will be fine for Manchester United at the weekend.”
“He used the first week with us to get fit. He was injured, I spoke to him and his ankle wasn’t in good shape but he has used the time well to recover and he is back and fit again.”
