Guus Hiddink has backed Pep Guardiola to be the next Chelsea manager. As of now, almost everyone believes Pep is headed to Manchester City, although there is still some belief that Manchester United have somewhat of a chance at Guardiola as well. (We broke down the Chelsea Manager race in further detail here at this link).
Hiddink seems pretty accepting of his caretaker manager status. Someone with designs on being something more than an interim wouldn’t talk like this.
Asked if he would recommend Guardiola take over the reins at Chelsea following his departure at the end of this season, Hiddink said:
“He has shown in a very fast career – from the second team in Barcelona – that he’s capable of managing a team very well.
“It is difficult to say, ‘Hey, you must go to a particular team in the Premier League’.
“I don’t want to put more pressure on the directors or the owner to decide. Let it happen as it happens.
“Would he fit in here? He would fit into any big club in the world.” (h/t Daily Star)
For what it’s worth, ESPN FC’s transfer expert, Gab Marcotti, gave Pep to Stamford Bridge a 7/10 likelihood rating (10 being the highest, 1 being the lowest)
