The important thing is that no one was at Assembly Hall to get hurt when this happened. So when you watch this video of a steal beam falling from the ceiling into the seats at Assembly Hall, home of the Indiana Hoosiers, remember, everyone is okay. And I have to say the term IU ‘s Assembly Hall because I don’t want to confuse it with the University of Illinois ‘ Assembly Hall. Which has renamed State Farm Center this year, but most people still call it Assembly Hall.
As you might expect, tonight’s home game versus the Iowa Hawkeyes has been postponed. Here’s the Vine of the rogue beam:
Obviously, Indiana needs to take the time to check this out and make sure Assembly Hall is safe before the Hoosiers play any more home games. It’s been a very rough year for Tom Crean and company, with an RPI near 100 they have zero chance of grabbing an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. And now their roof is falling apart.
Below is a statement from Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta regarding the postponement of the Iowa-Indiana men’s basketball game.
“Obviously, we are disappointed tonight’s game had to be cancelled. Fran and his team are in contention for a Big Ten title and were looking forward to the opportunity to getting back on the court. The most important part of this equation is safety. We are in full support of Indiana’s decision to postpone the game based on the issues with Assembly Hall. Coach McCaffery and his team are returning from Indiana tonight. We are working with Indiana Athletic Director Fred Glass and the Big Ten Conference to determine when and, possibly, where to play the game.”
