2012 NFL Season Preview: NFC East

With the NFL regular season rapidly approaching, let’s take a look at the intriguing NFC East.  Featuring the reigning Super Bowl champions (Giants), the former “Dream Team” turned “dynasty in the making” (Eagles), the league’s most exciting rookie (Robert Griffin III), and America’s team (you know who that is), this division might just prove to be the wildest in the NFL.

Giants: Remember the 2008 team that started 11-1 after winning Super Bowl XLI?  This squad could be similar, with a confident defending champion facing a mild early schedule.  They addressed two big depth needs at RB and WR with their first two draft picks (David Wilson and Reuben Randle), while third-rounder CB Jayron Hosley has made some noise in the preseason.  Just ask Mark Sanchez.

Redskins Ryan Kerrigan NFL Rookie of Month, Boiler Up, Purdue People

We knew he was going to be dominant at the next level. It was obvious when you saw how he tore up Big Ten offensive lines.

The National Football League announced today Washington Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan as the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for September. He is the first Redskins player to win the award since Chris Horton in September 2008 and the fourth overall to receive the honor (Horton, Fred Smoot in September 2001 and Champ Bailey in October 1999).

It’s getting to be a bigger week for Purdue Boilermakers fans, at least on the NFL level. Curtis Painter should start at QB for the Indianapolis Colts this week.

Surprises from Week One in the NFL

Peyton Manning Fantasy Football

Stadiums, bars, and couches were packed all over the country as fans paid tribute to their fallen heroes from ten years ago and enjoyed the first Sunday during the professional football season. Besides wagering, the one thing that makes the NFL so appealing is that it is unpredictable. In baseball, it is obvious that the Red Sox and Yankees will perennially compete for the division crown. In the NFL, on any given Sunday…. Ok, enough with the Al Pacino flashback.

The Buffalo Bills took the Kansas City Chiefs out to the woodshed during week one. Ryan Fitzpatrick didn’t put up big time yardage, but he did attain four touchdowns and spread the ball around with efficiency. Four receivers had more than sixty yards each in yardage. They were Stevie Johnson, David Nelson, and Scott Chandler. The thirty-four point victory on the road showed that good players don’t necessarily need to have name recognition from the masses.

Redskins Brandon Banks Over-Celebrating? Joe Theismann Over-Reacting?

If you haven’t seen Washington Redskins punt returner Brandon Banks 95-yard TD return versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the other night- it was electric. You can see the video here at Shutdown Corner.

And you can hear television analyst and former Skins QB Joe Theismann deride Banks for his evil and selfish behavior. The Redskins play-maker was a little too insouciant in the way he flipped the ball out as he hit the plain of the end zone. The replay challenge gave Theismann plenty of opportunity to really articulate his anti-showboating platform.

I see where the ex Notre Dame signal caller is coming from, but seriously this is the NFL and what Banks did was extremely mild and mundane when it comes to end zone celebration standards.

Bigger Champions of 2010 Futility: Redskins or Vikings?

Daniel Snyder and Zygi Wilf must be two of the most disgruntled men in the NFL right now. The former is the owner of the Washington Redskins while the latter possesses the Minnesota Vikings.

It must be a little rougher for Wilf at this juncture considering that he is losing massive amounts of revenue from relocating home dates to less lucrative options. This is in addition to the fact that he already had one of the least advantageous lease agreements in the league. His deals relating to suite money, parking, and concessions are not up to par compared to other franchises. At least Snyder can count on having one of the top attendance counts in the NFC East; along with the other benefits that come from being one of the highest profile teams on a consistent basis.

For now, let’s compare who’s been the bigger disappointment in 2010, and cover each area.

Redskins Start Off Black Monday With Jim Zorn Firing

By Alex Simon

After an eventful two seasons (unfortunately, not many eventful things happened on the field) the Redskins started off Black Monday early today by announcing the sacking of Jim Zorn.  Zorn met with the GM Bruce Allen at approximately 4am, when Zorn learned of his firing.

This news does not come to much surprise considering the past speculations and the actions the Skins took throughout this season.  Whether it was taking Zorn’s offensive play calling away and giving it to a Bingo player or interviewing an assistant coach in the middle of the season, the Redskins made it clear Zorn would not be the head football coach after this season.
