Shea Weber To Stay In Nashville, Predators Match Flyers’ Offer Sheet

Last week, the Philadelphia Flyers made a monster offer sheet to restricted free agent Shea Weber for 14 years and $110 million.  After a week of speculation of will they or won’t they, the Nashville Predators decided to match the offer sheet, which means Weber will stay with the only team he has known through his entire NHL career.  After losing unrestricted free agent Ryan Suter to the Minnesota Wild, the idea of losing both players in one offseason was too much.  To find out what the signing of Weber means for the Predators future, continue after the jump.

Flyers’ Biggest Stars Aren’t producing in the Finals

Much has been made of the Chicago Blackhawks‘ top line struggles during these 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. At least up until game 5, when the Hawks’ young stars and big names broke through to help give Chicago it’s most dominating game of the postseason.

But what about the Philadelphia Flyers? Captain Mike Richards, regular season MVP Chris Pronger, and key offensive weapon Jeff Carter were all big shooters all season long. And two of them have had big stretches this postseason. But what’s up with them now?

Blackhawks, Flyers finally play like their seedings in game 5

chris-pronger-flyers

So there’s been some obvious trends in this 2010 Stanley Cup Finals– the home team seems to do really well, and every game has been close. In game 5 Sunday night between the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers, the first trend held true, but the second truly did not. The #2 seeded Blackhawks (who had the third most points in the NHL this season) were heavy favorites over the #7 seeded Flyers (who finished 18th out of the 30 NHL teams in points) when this series began.

During the first four games, we didn’t see why Vegas liked Chicago so much better. Tonight we did.

Chicago Blackhawks playoff winning streak ends, still up 2-1

For Blackhawks fans the sound echoing in the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia is a lot like the air rushing out of a dude after said dude has been punched in the gut. The 4-3 overtime loss to the Flyers in game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals wasn’t debilitating by any means but it was definitely a wake up call that there is still work to be done.

As much as we try to spread the word about the glorious sport of hockey, we know that more often than not our words fall on deaf ears. Two Sides of the Coin: Philadelphia Flyers Edition

The Flyers and their Fans celebrate winning the Eastern Conference Finals

The Flyers have the underdog luck and momentum on their side. As a 7 seed that waited until the final seconds of the regular season to secure their playoff fate, they’ve been riding the lightning ever since. Their route to the Stanley Cup Finals was an unconventional one as they knocked off the Eastern Conference’s #2 seed, #6 seed and #8 seed. Now they play a Chicago Blackhawks team that won 11 more games in the regular season and has lost a total of 12 less games in the regular season and post season combined. Do the Flyers have a chance? I’ve got your two sided outlook after the jump.
