Philadelphia Eagles Coach Chip Kelly quasi-endorses The Sports Bank

For the 2011-12 holidays I was in sunny Pasadena, enjoying the absolutely first rate hospitality a media member receives when covering the Rose Bowl; the greatest bowl game of them all. And to top it all off:

I’m told by the winning coach of a BCS game (Oregon Ducks’ Chip Kelly) that my business and marketing ideas are superb! In a crowded room full of my media peers no less!

Bret Bielema’s slight shot at Wisconsin is telling for the school and the Big Ten

bret bielema tweet

Arkansas’ new head coach, Bret Bielema, has been anything  but shy in regards to expressing his feelings on almost anything via twitter.

The former Wisconsin Badgers head coach has increased his online activity ten-fold since moving to Fayetteville and doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

It’s obvious that Bielema hasn’t completely moved on from his former job, evident from petty fights with disgruntled Badgers fans, but not all of his thoughts are random twitter fodder.

Some of his tweets accurately reflect why the Big Ten currently resides so far behind the nation’s mecca of college football, the much-hated Southeastern Conference. [Read more…]

Big Ten Championship - Nebraska v Wisconsin

Story-lines run thick in the 99th installment of the Rose Bowl between the #8 Stanford Cardinal and Wisconsin Badgers.

The Badgers are playing in their third straight Rose Bowl and look to hall-of-fame coach Barry Alvarez to improve upon his perfect 3-0 record in Pasasdena.

Stanford enters the game on a three-game streak in BCS Bowls (Fiesta in 2011 and Orange in 2010) as well and is perhaps one of the hottest teams in the country with their last four wins coming against ranked opponents.

Bielema to Arkansas puts the cherry on top of a bizarre year for Wisconsin

bret-bielema

If it wasn’t weird enough to see a five loss Wisconsin Badgers team go to the Rose Bowl, Bret Bielema has shocked the college football community in taking the Arkansas Razorbacks’ vacant head coaching job.

Was it all about the money?

Probably so, but let’s not discount Bielema’s urge to win a National Championship and we all know the SEC is ten times better equipped to do so then the Big Ten. [Read more…]

Wisconsin is going back to Cali for a third straight Rose Bowl

With credit to the late Notorious B.I.G., the Wisconsin Badgers are going, going, back, back to Cali after demolishing the Nebraska Cornhuskers 70-31 in the Big Ten Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The 70 points the Badgers (8-5) scored are tied for the second most in the modern era in school-history and tied for the most ever in a conference championship game (Texas had 70 in 2005).

UW’s three-headed monster is back and fiercer than ever as Montee Ball, James White and Melvin Gordon combined for 539 yards rushing and nine total touchdowns.

Big Ten Title Game between Wisconsin and Nebraska has B1G ramifications

For the Wisconsin Badgers, a win at the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis would mean three straight Big Ten titles and three consecutive Rose Bowl appearances, a feet which is unprecedented in school history.

For the Nebraska Cornhuskers, a win in the Championship game would be their official welcome to the conference as they move on from a successful history in the Big 12 and start anew in just their second year in the Big Ten.

Wisconsin stomps into a Big Ten Championshp birth with 62-14 win over Indiana

The rest of the Leaders Division will have to wait another year because the Wisconsin Badgers will be the Leaders’ representative in the Big Ten Championship for the second straight year after a 62-14 win against Indiana at Memorial Stadium.

Last season was the inaugural year for the Championship in Indianapolis, so make it 2-for-2 for the Badgers (7-3, 4-2).

It’s gotten to the point where the Hoosiers (4-6, 2-3) dread playing the Badgers as they’ve been outscored 204-41 in their last three games against Wisconsin. Not only that, but the Badgers racked up a school-record 566 rushing yards in the win.

Michigan State ends the Wisconsin Badgers’ 21-game home winning streak

With a thrilling 16-13 overtime win against Wisconsin, the Michigan State Spartans have proven that the Badgers can indeed be defeated at Camp Randall.

Wisconsin came into the game with the second longest active home-winning streak in the nation at 21 games, their last loss at home coming on October 17th of 2009.

The Badgers defense had quite possibly their best game of the season, but in the end they were on the field just way too much as the Spartans’ quarterback Andrew Maxwell led his team on a pair of late touchdown drives.

#25 Wisconsin faces a stiff test with the Michigan State defense

Unbeaten in their last 21 home games are the Wisconsin Badgers who feel they are back on track as one of the Big Ten’s elite teams after dominating wins overs Purdue and Minnesota.

What the Boilermakers and Gophers do not have, but the visiting Michigan State Spartans do is a legitimate defense.

If Michigan State had a business card, it would say “DEFENSE” in big bold letters and nothing else because it’s all they really need to keep a game close. But will their defense be enough to pull the ever-so rare upset at Camp Randall?

Wisconsin’s James White at the hub of the new and exciting “barge” package

In a 38-13 win over the Minnesota Gophers, the Wisconsin Badgers went creative and introduced a wildcat formation known as the “barge” package.

At the hub of the package is running back James White who’s actually quite familiar with taking the direct snap.

“It’s pretty cool. It’s something I did in high school, so it’s not something that’s too new to me. It’s just another way to me the ball, and I just try to take advantage of it,” said James who scored one of his three touchdowns out of this formation. [Read more…]
