What’s going to happen with Colin Kaepernick? Is the 49ers quarterback of the future? What happens if and when Colin Kaepernick hits the open market in the NFL?
Well, here are some ideas.
This topic was debated on CBS Sports Network, their evening talking heads program “Monday Evening Quarterback.” Here’s some of what was said.
Rich Gannon:
‘If I’m Colin Kaepernick, I think I’m in a great position. I can play out my contract and I can put myself in a position to test the free-agent waters. But this guy, regardless, is going to get paid.’
Steve Beuerlein:
‘The style of play that Colin Kaepernick brings to the table always puts him at risk for the potential injury that may happen next year if he decides to play out the contract. That’s something that he and his advisors are going to have to factor into the whole equation… If I’m the 49ers, I want to pay him what he’s worth. You know he’s going to be your franchise guy for a lot of years, given good health. Say, ‘You know, you haven’t won the Super Bowl yet, so we can’t pay you like the Joe Flaccos of the world quiet yet, but we want to take very good care of you, maybe on a shorter term contract and see what happens down the road.’
Everyone’s favorite announcer on Twitter, Phil Simms:
I’d say this to Colin Kaepernick: Sign. Don’t play it out. Don’t take a risk… You have to pay this guy. Look at what he’s done. If I was a coach, general manager or owner of a football team, I would love for him to be my quarterback. No doubt about it… You can fix whatever you see that is wrong with him. He is going to be one of the franchise quarterbacks. Does he get $20 million per year? I don’t know. What’s the difference between $16 million and $20 million? I know it’s a lot… but (if you’re Colin Kaepernick) are you going to let that get in the way and play a year out there where you could get hurt? The game is too rough.
