The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Chris Volstad from Triple-A Iowa.  To make room for Volstad on the roster, Casey Coleman has been optioned to Triple-A. Sorry for the bad news Cubs fans.

An just when you had won four in a row…Volstad will make the start for the Cubs tonight against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.

A member of Chicago’s starting rotation to start the season, Volstad went 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA (34 ER/41.0 IP) in eight starts with the Cubs before being optioned to Iowa on May 18. Great numbers, yes we know.

With Iowa he wasn’t all that much better when you consider a major drop in competitive level, Volstad went 2-3 with a 4.44 ERA (25 ER/50.2 IP) in eight starts.  He takes a 19-start winless streak into this evening’s outing and aims for his first win since July 10, 2011 vs. Houston with the Marlins. Good luck with that.

Volstad, 25, was acquired from the Miami Marlins on January 5 for right-handed pitcher Carlos Zambrano.  He went  5-13 with a 4.89 ERA (90 ER/165.2 IP) in 29 starts last year with the Marlins.

Coleman is 0-1 with a 7.32 ERA (16 ER/19.2 IP) in 16 relief outings with the Cubs this season and is 2-3 with a 3.48 ERA (13 ER/33.2 IP) in seven appearances (six starts) with Iowa.
