Jereme Richmond Downward Spiral Continues: Ex-Illini Arrested for Battery (UPDATE)

When former Illinois Fighting Illini forward Jereme Richmond left school for a couple days without clear explanation, it raised a couple eyebrows. When he got into a fight with teammates after the loss to the Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten Tournament, character issues were once again raised.

When he left school early, after one unimpressive season to enter the NBA Draft, many thought what is he thinking? When he skipped meetings with NBA teams, we were all in full red flag mode on this kid. When his name was not called on NBA Draft night, we realized the nail in the coffin for his hoop dreams.

And today is the cement, dirt and grass over the coffin of his NBA potential.

From 670 The Score/CBS 2 Chicago:

“Former Illini basketball player Jereme Richmond is currently being held in Lake County Jail on two counts of aggravated battery, 670 The Score has learned. The Lake County Jail operator confirmed Richmond’s arrest and said the former Waukegan standout did not post bail. He was in bond court as of 12:30 p.m.”

More details surface from the Daily Herald:

Richmond was charged Tuesday with beating a woman and threatening her with a gun.

“Richmond, 19, and Matthew Riley, 22, of North Chicago, were arrested Monday afternoon outside the victim’s house after police found a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol in the car the men had driven…Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Stephen Scheller said Richmond and the 17-year-old woman had a dating relationship that had soured in recent weeks…Monday afternoon, Scheller said, Richmond and Meyer drove to the woman’s house and Richmond began to argue with her again as her mother looked on. At one point, Scheller said, Richmond spit on the woman and said he was going to shoot her.”

Wow! the article goes on to indicate that Richmond could face up to 14 years in prison, if convicted. And that his bond was set at $100,000.
