The Illinois Fighting Illini vs the Duke Blue Devils- yes, what a Final Four matchup we have on our hands in Detroit, on this early April Saturday night. Oh, sorry, no, this is football, not men’s basketball. But last year’s match-up on the gridiron was an entertaining one, and this year’s edition should be compelling as well. Illinois beat Duke, at their place, last season, 45-19 in a tale of two halves. It’s pretty similar to what happened in the opener this year against UAB, 42-23, in a tale of two halves.
Up until that meaningless TD with 9 seconds left, the #Illini were 26 pts ahead, with the pregame spread -27.

Illini Defense vs Duke Offense
Both programs might have taken a step back this season. Preseason expectations for Illinois were mid, and understandably so. Not many people believe that Illinois will win nine games again this season. Likewise next to no one believes that Duke will the ACC again.
Enough has already been said about Duke running back Nate Sheppard, his 227 yards rushing on 35 carries in week one, and the anxiety that generates when you consider how extremely poor the Illini run defense looked in the opener.
There is no getting around that. It’s quite possible that Sheppard just gets his, no matter what first year defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck does.
And it’s a brutal truth that the Illini just don’t have the personnel in the front six.
The talent and depth level, at a few of those positions, is more Group of Five level than it is Big Ten. However, maybe the playmakers in the secondary, Xavier Scott, Juice Clarke, Matthew Bailey and so forth, can provide enough difference-making ability.
However, it’s worth noting that Duke QB Walker Eget is a major step down from Darian Mensah, who left to take a very lucrative NIL deal at Miami.
Eget led the Blue Devils to only 17 points versus Tulane, even despite the astronomical production of Sheppard. In other words, this overall matchup isn’t as scary as you might think.
Illini Offense vs Duke Defense
QB1 Katin Houser led a very quick strike offense in week one, as the Illini won comfortably, despite being dominated in time of possesion. TOP doesn’t really matter if you win explosion plays and the other team self-destructs with penalites.
Illinois is thin at wide receiver, due to injuries, so they must get the ball to the tight ends more. Seriously, c’mon Barry, let’s see some TE Slant and TE Out routes.
In the run game, Duke has a much better feature back, but the Illini have just has good a ground game, if not better. They just do it by committee instead.
The guy to man mark on Duke’s D is DE Bryce Davis. The blue-chip recruit who originally committed to Clemson had two sacks last week, as the Devils held Tulane to just three points.
However, it’s worth noting that the Green Wave offense is pragmatic and pedestrian.
They are not swashbuckling like the Illini.
Prediction: Illini 28, Duke 24
The Blue Devils will move the ball, but Illinois will be bend-but-not-break enough to stay out in front. This one will be pretty tight, but expect the Orange and Blue to complete this home-and-home sweep.
Fun fact: the Illini and Duke are playing each other in both revenue sports this calendar/academic year.
